The wasp was attempting to drag the spider up the back wall of the house. It dropped the spider a couple of times and at one point seemingly abandoned it for quite some time. However, I assume it must have reconnoitred the route to its burrow (in the front yard) and found new landmarks, for it eventually dragged the spider along the ground, parallel to the house’s back wall, and then alongside the side wall. From the time I first saw the wasp, it took over a half hour before the spider was in the burrow.
