There were enormous patches at different points along the firetrail.

I think it has to be at that altitude. The fact that the flower is solitary is a pLus. However, gloriosa flowers are usually much brighter, purple to deep blue. The details of the stem and leaves that I have looked at all fall into the categories starting, sometimes ..... in the plant description. In other words, it is quite atypical.
