The Taxeotis all look rather similar to me.
Ian: are there ways of distinguishing T. sterospila from say T. exsectaria?

Yes, they are variable within species as a group, but as is often the case Moths of Victoria (Part 4 in this case) is useful. There are some distinguishing notes on the supporting CDs for some of the Taxeotis species there. For example, for T. stereospila the note is: 'Can be separated from other Taxeotis by the dark (forewing) spot with a pale centre (arrowed)'; and forT. exsectaria: 'It can be recognised by the rust-coloured head and face (arrow)'. In this specimen I think the large forewing spot with a pale centre is visible.
