User's notes

I have never seen milk thistles as tall as this - more than 160 cm and so taller than the shrubs planted in 2015!

I am not sure this is not Sonchus asper. Were the leaves stiff and more or less leathery (asper) or soft and thin (oleraceus)

I have added a couple of photos and leaves are prickly and leathery. So it is as you suggested Sonchus asper.

I think Daisy Sonchus asper (Prickly Sowthistle) on 26 May 2017 is also Sonchus asper and might cause confusion if someone is trying a comparison. (Now re-identified.)

I understand that Sonchus asper sometimes has red stems, maybe because of temperature, age, rate of growth, etc. HGW plants must have grown at the rate of knots as they appeared suddenly and grew so rapidly.
