Bit too wild a guess, that one. I'm guessing it might be an incredibly vigorous Tricoryne elatior in fruit. I have some photos of this species with fruit on it, and they do look quite similar.

Thank you. Apologies for the wild guess! We have sighted Tricoryne elator in flower in previous years in the same area. I have checked photos of the fruit on the web and they do look very similar. I believe it is very difficult to grow from seed. The Chrysocephalum apiculatim on this western slope have been very vigorous, numerous and really striking this year. These species are growing amongst Kangaroo grass.

I think they are all fruits, but the number per cluster varies, as does the colour (degree of ripeness presumably). This was a very happy and productive plant!
