I'm inclined to think this is Psilosticha absorpta based on the similarity with the two specimens identified as such on CNM based on the gentleness of the curved line in the forewing and the relative location of the black tick marks on the leading edge of the forewiing, however the black markings overall seem to be heavier and less well-defined than those examples.

The much darker colouration made me think I had a different species.

Yes, the wavy lines are quite as for P. absorpta. The forwewing pattern matches an unnamed Thallogama genus species that has been recorded only on Black Mountain, plus one sawpit Creek specimen.

Good one, very interesting. Moths of Victoria, Part 7 has supplementary pdf image for a dark grey female 'Thallogama sp.1' (Genoa Peak, far east Vic.) which , when I look at it now, looks very similar to this moth i.e. the same heavier, less finer markings than. P. absorpta.

I'm still not certain, esp when you compare this photo with Michael's other photo of Psilosticha mactaria, but I no longer believe it is a Thallogama sp.

It is more likely to be Ectropis fractaria. It has the "eyespot" in the centre of the hindwing that is characteristic of E. fractaria rather than Psilosticha and the other Ectropis.
