I don't believe Goniaea carinata has a pronotal keel -- the only species with it at least this prominent should be G. australasiae.

Just to confirm that carinata has a prominent keel. Opomaloides is the local keel less sp.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for this. Do you know where a key to the species can be found? I've seen specimens labelled as opomaloides and carinata and neither had keels. In fact, I've been trying to find a way to separate these two species for some time as even in specimens they looked identical. Now I'm wondering if there were misidentifications here and in fact I should be seeking for differences between australasiae and carinata.

No Keys! The best reference is 'a guide to Australian Grasshoppers and Locusts by Rentz et el 2003, out of print but 2nd hand copies available for about $60-70. Cheers Roger

Hi James, Just checking the pictures again, the pronotal crest of carinata is lower than that of australasiae, so the crest is not prominent as I suggested earlier.
