Not quite sure how to implement this: this specimen is a female Rutilia sp., either R.imperialis or R.imperialoides; a distinction cannot be made on current taxonomic evidence as these two species can only be distinguished using characters on the male genitalia

Rutilia sp.(genus) seems right to me. Not sure why I mentioned Rutilia twice (in brackets) when suggesting an ID . Presumably it is a taxonomic convention of some sort. PS. As we now know, this observation was apparently the catalyst for a long standing CNM systems bug for me which has now been resolved! (1/12/18).

"Rutila (Rutilia) sp. means that its a species in the subgenus Rutilia, which is witin the genus Rutilia. Subgenera are not a common convention, but have been deemed necessary in this genus. The fly in the above image is in the subgenus Chrysorutilia, so it should be "Rutilia
(Chrysorutilia) sp., nr (near) imperialis (indicating that its probably this species but can't be confirmed by the photos.

OK, thanks for explaining how this works. I assume it was named this way on the ALA.

Yes, I know. When working for ACT Govt. We used AFD as the taxonomic authority for species naming for legislation. Its the detail of some taxonomic conventions that I lack knowledge of.
