In Plantago gaudichaudii, the length:width ratio in the leaves is 10-15. These are much wider than that. It could also be Plantago debilis or Plantago hispida, which have much smaller flowers than Plantago varia, and tufts of white to golden brown hairs less than 2 mm long at the bases of the leaves. Plantago varia has tufts of golden brown to red brown hairs 2 mm long or much longer at the bases of the leaves.
