Assuming that some of the leaves in the photo belong to this sedge how about Cyperus rotundus - which is a weedy exotic one and fits with being a backyard species

One of the references I looked at said it was one of the world's worst weeds (this was an agricultural reference), good luck in getting rid of it snapperroonie.
