User's notes

Eucalyptus sp ? Main Reason for drawing your attention to this sighting is : THE VERY HEAVY LERP / SCALE Insect INFESTATION present on this young (roadside) planted tree. Evey Leaf & every branch is COVERED with at least 2 SPECIES of scale insect (see photos), plus some accompanying 'Farming' Ants. Can this young tree survive this mass infestation ? Surprisingly another Gum tree (same species I think ) just a few metres away has ALMOST NO Infestation. I'd be interested to hear what anyone makes of this ??

If they are the same species they are very different biochemically, one producing sap the lerps like, the other not. More likely that they are lookalikes but not the same species.

Hi Betty, Thanks a lot for your ideas here. I will go back to the specimen trees and have a closer look at features to ID / separate them.

Hi All, I've double checked this location again. There are 10 (roadside) Gum trees planted here, all of the same species & approx. age (in my estimation). Only the one tree has this heavy Lerp/Scale insect infestation. One other tree has a limited infestation (20 %). The other specimen trees have none. What do you make of this ?

Max - Village Building Company planted 3 euc species west of the fence: E blakelyi, E bridgesiana, and E melliodora. I will check next Friday. E blakelyi trees and saplings are often affected see for instance https://www.flickr.com/photos/61627737@N03/5960367129/in/pool-1745488@N23/
