A huge area of Clematis is now dead???????!

Guys I was a bit worried about this beautiful huge crop of Clematis, now completely dead. Waltraud do you know this colony? The good news is that there is literally tons of other surrounding plants spreading into the surrounding fenced off paddock and now growing along the fence. But why would this huge section die off?

these Clematis vines were cut off a year ago or so. And they were not the first - further south along the trail someone cut and ripped out large amounts. I assume the person who cut the Clematis thought they are weeds. I placed notices a number of times to inform that this is a native species. I hope this will stop the vandalism...
