Wow! I must have said this 20 times today :) A leisurely day trip to Morton NP and return had me at Oallen crossing on the Shoalhaven around midday. I was looking for jewel beetles and also the possibility of a peacock spider called Maratus anomalus. Before long, and to my absolute surprise and delight I soon saw a 2.5mm 'blob on a rock'. Composing myself and then taking some shots I confirmed I was looking at Maratus robinsoni !! I had last seen this sp. about ten years ago near beaches south of Newcastle, a jewel of the sandy strata there. I also met Pete Robinson, its discoverer, lovely man. This is a significant range extension with most being sighted surf side in northern NSW. Two inland sightings have occurred both in relation to sandy habitats. Many peacock spiders lay claim to being 'opalesque' but M. robinsoni takes the cake! Just when you think you will find the 'same-old-same-old' Mother Nature delivers once more. And they wonder why we all rave about this 'citizen science thing......
