Hi Peter, these are probably the species Dolichoderus scabridus given the location, but I can't be sure from the photo. They would likely be feeding on honeydew from scale insects or similar. The white V you see on the abdomen isn't really there - the downy hairs on the abdomen reflect the light in a pattern like that when you view them in the right position. Cheers, Jon
