Wondering what the black fungi/mould/disease on this eucalyptus is (and whether I should report it to act govt for removal). Looks awful after rain like someone has dumped paint on it from above.
You are correct this is a black fungi mould, but it is probably growing so well because the tree is also infected by scales/lerps, the white waxy insects evident in your close-up leaf photos. The scales exuding sugars that the mould is growing on. I will ask the City Services Tree Unit whether this is something to worry about and post teh answer back here.
Rachael Dawes, the Director of Urban Treescapes, got back to me. An arborist inspected the tree, which is the only one in the area suffering from sooty mould. They expect that the tree should come good itself, but will re-inspect in Spring.
