Wow, suddenly there are loads and loads of these sightings popping up, but all recently. Personally I am aware of seeing more of these flies around than usual, but is this fungus new to our area? I don't think I ever felt sorry for a fly before, but this fungus!!!
Roger Farrow mentions fungi in 'Insects of South-Eastern Australia, p.160 so perhaps there are more reports because people are taking more notice (look how many coconut ant nests have been reported since they were known to be important). I wonder if my sighting of a blue-abdomen fly Helina sp. (genus) (Muscid fly) is also a fungus.
