All species of Wahlenvpbergia have similar flowers when photographed head on. Some of the characters that distinguish between them, are the ratio of tube to free lobes in the flower, seen when a flower is photographed side on, the shape of the leaves and whether the leaf edges are frilly, and whether the leaves are opposite each other on the stem or not, and whether the flower stalks are branched or not.

The two commonest Wahlenbergias with the ratio of free lobes to tube in the flower as shown in the secomd photo are capillaris (previously communis) with leaves 0.5-8 mm wide and alternating up the stems, and stricta var. stricta, with leaves 1-13 mm wide and opposite each other, and often with frilly edges.
