The white background is a corticioid fungus, through which the Claussenomyces was growing from the underlying wood. In the second photo I have included views of some spores within asci, showing spores in various stages of development. At the lower right only one cross-wall has developed thus far in spore 1. In spore 2 you see several cross-walls across the shorter dimension but also two short cross-walls perpendicular to those across the shorter dimension (and the lower end of the grey line almost touches one of those perpendicular walls). The uppermost spore at the top right also has cross-walls in each direction. The crimson colour comes from the stain phloxine. Herbarium collection HL6302 at CANB.
