User's notes

This looks like a Gippsland Water Dragon, but It's not on the species list. I read somewhere they are no longer classed as a subspecies, but I'm not certain.

I have seen this mentioned at a herp web site but havn't seen any research referred to that has recommended dropping the two subspecies names. I have emailed some colleagues who might know but so far no replies. If anyone sees a reference to a scientific paper recently published on this topic I am keen to follow up. Thanks WillO

Thanks Will. I put up the classification. It was simply a matter of convenience. It would be possibly to create separate (sub)species categories if you were prepared to reclassify the records. However, for historical, non photoed, records I am not sure if they state the subspecies. How easy it is it to distinguish subspecies for younger animals? This may lead to three categories (two sub-species and indeterminate - a little messy). How important it is to distinguish between the two sub-species. Possibly other species could be split, e.g. the two different forms of White's Skink. Geoff
