On a fallen, old fence paling in a suburban garden. The third photo, with the drawn back view, shows why it is easy to overlook genera such as Hysterium. In the fourth photo I show spores, in a potassium hydroxide mount. The use of a bluish filter explains the different colour in the top left. Mature spores are pale brown (in all cells) and have three transverse septa. The middle septum forms first. The red arrows point to two faint, developing septa. In between the two arrows you see the already fully-formed middle septum quite clearly.
